Conventions of Drama genre

Conventions of Drama:

Drama’s exhibits real life situations with realistic characters, settings and story lines.
They portray journeys of character development and add intense social interaction filled with climaxes to keep the audience emotionally attached to the ongoing tension.
The purpose of a dramatic storyline is to move the audience emotionally, they do this through getting the audience to relate to the characters, they usually including a happy ending.

There are different types of sub-drama's that have all different genres. Here are some examples. This is done so that the drama type of films can attract a wider audience, for example if one person doesn't like action drama movies, it doesn't mean they don't enjoy 'drama' as a whole, they may enjoy comedy drama.

These are examples of successful Drama Films.

Not all Drama's stick to these conventions and put their own twist's to allow their films to stand out, here are two examples of two films who have not stuck to the conventions.

A Serious Man-

This is a comedy drama which broke the convention of a typical ending where the audience knew what was going to happen to the main character.

Titanic-
Titanic broke the Drama conventions as it does not have a happy ending, it has a tragic ending. Although this is a hugely successful film, this does not apply to the conventions.

Social Realism

Social Realism is a genre of film that focuses on topical issues alive in modern society. This is often used in Drama genre as this has the same conventions. Social Realism use themes such as money, drugs and sex as they are quite usual in modern society and in modern films. An example of a film with the use of Social Realism is This is England. This is England applies the convention of Social Realism because the genre uses unknown actors which makes the characters appear more realistic to the audience as they can be anyone.
